“Women have been the faceless, forgotten figures of history.” These words are the first sentence of the book Our Hidden Heritage: Pennsylvania Women in History. Members of AAUW Easton Branch try to change that as they portray several famous women from Easton by describing their many accomplishments. The women portrayed lived from the 18th century to the 20h century.
Some of the women portrayed over the years include:
-
- Jeanette Reibman, Pennsylvania senator
- Belle Archer, actress
- Florence Seibert, research scientist
- Elizabeth Wysor, opera singer
- Helen Beebe, speech pathologist
- Mildren Hicks-Bruun, research chemist
- Margaret Junkin Preston, writer
- Mammy Morgan, legal advisor, practitioner of home medicine, education advocate
These women displayed “gumption, ambition and compassion for others” opening doors for today’s women.
March is Women’s History Month, and so it is fitting that the stories of these often unknown but remarkable women are told then. Easton Branch members take on the personas of these women, some dressing the part, as they show and tell adults and children what it was like to live and work and be a woman over the last several centuries.
